First Week

So, my first week on the furniture making course. One down, 44 or thereabouts to go.

It's been a whirlwind of information overload, getting to know my co-students (and teacher!), settling in. This is the view from my workbench.

Also, I've been spending money, lots of money. Tools: many of them. Here is the first batch:

Since then, several more parcels have been delivered! And I've started the process of tuning my first ever plane, a Clifton No. 4 Smoothing Plane. Initially, it's all about dismantling, adjusting... there's something unnerving about the idea of taking something shiny and brand new (and expensive) and stating "This is good, but it isn't good enough," and then taking a set of files to it.

I also got my first cut! Scraping the varnish off one of my screwdriver handles, my hand slipped and lo and behold a small cut across the first crease of my right middle finger. Alas. But... it could have been worse.
